About The Event
Please join Midcoast Conservancy and Sebasticook River Land Trust for an inspiring, 6-mile canoe/kayak paddle on the Sebasticook River, starting from below the Benton Dam to just above the intersection of the Kennebec River. The trip will be led by Midcoast Conservancy board members Chris Kenoyer and Buck O'Herin. If our timing is good, we can expect to see over 100 eagles, along with herons, loons, ducks, and possibly otters and minks, all drawn to feast on the huge schools of spawning fish. This is not a technically difficult paddle, with only minor current and rapids that never exceed Class 1 (the lowest degree of difficulty). However, folks should have a basic knowledge of steering their watercraft in currents and be physically fit enough to feel comfortable paddling for up to 4 hours. If there are no headwinds and the water level is high, we could cover the 6 miles in as little as 2 hours, even with lots of bird watching time. No bathrooms along the way, just the woods. Take out at Fort Halifax Park in Winslow. Participants need to provide their own watercraft, paddles, and life preservers. Bring water, adequate clothing and a snack. Raindate: Sunday, May 26.
