About The Event
We will be planting trees and shrubs along the parking area at the entrance way to Rines Preserve, and maintaining an area along the trail that looks over the fen - a bog-like wetland adjacent to Bog Brook. The trail follows an esker that intersects the fen to the east and a woodland to the west that is more similar to the northern boreal forests of northern Maine. This unique coalescing of two habitat types makes the Rines Preserve one of our most biologically diverse properties and terrific for birdwatching. Waldo County Soil and Water Conservation District contributed elderberry shrubs in support of enhancing wildlife habitat here and at our Moulton's Mill Preserve nearby. Please be prepared for working in woodland and field conditions with high grass, and potential exposure to ticks and biting insects. Directions from downtown Unity to the Rines Preserve: Head west on Route 139. The property is located on the south side of the road approx. 2.3 miles west of Main Street. There is a gravel lot to park.
